Date & Time
Friday, April 12, 2019, 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM
Description

Community Land Trusts (CLTs) have not been well connected to the other types of organizations that make up the movement for economic democracy.  This panel will include both research papers and a roundtable discus-sion with practitioners on the theme of connecting CLTs to the larger movement for economic democracy.

As forms of land tenure that both removes property from the market and places it under the control of communities, Community Land Trusts (CLTs) would seem to be a logical component of the movement for economic democracy.  Accordingly, CLTs are often discussed in the same breath as other forms of community, collective, or cooperative ownership.  In practice, however, CLTs have not been particularly well-integrated with worker and consumer cooperatives, community development credit unions, and other organizational components of the movement for economic democracy. In this hybrid researcher/practitioner session we bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss the ways in which CLTs have been and are being brought together with other forms of democratic ownership.  Research will be presented on the logistical uses of CLTs beyond their usual focus on housing, and on the political potential of CLTs to be part of a larger movement for social transformation.  Practitioners will discuss their experiences working within the movement for economic democracy and their understandings of the potential and limitations of CLTs in that movement.
