Katherine Chen is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the City College of New York and the Graduate Center of CUNY. Her specialties include ethnographic studies of how organizing practices in membership institutions can incorporate – rather than suppress – the interests of members. Currently, Professor Chen is working on the ethnography of an organization that originated out of the democratic free school movement, attempting to show how that organization communicates its unfamiliar mission and practices to its stakeholders. Her numerous publications include an award-winning book, Enabling Creative Chaos: The Organization behind the Burning Man Event. kchen@ccny.cuny.edu
