Speaker Bio
Founded by Roger L. Green, Citizen Share Brooklyn and the Society for Effective Economic Democracy (SEED), were inspired by grassroots efforts to save Interfaith Medical Center, a multi-site community health care system that today provides medical, surgical, gynecological, dental, psychiatric, pediatric, and other services throughout Central Brooklyn, In 2004, Green became a co-chair of The Coalition to Transform/Save Interfaith Medical Center. The Coalition’s broader mission was to redress structural economic inequality and health care disparities found in poor and working-poor communities of color. The Coalition, which included 1199 Healthcare Workers East and New York State Nurses Association as well as faith leaders and other health-justice advocates, continues its work to ensure that Interfaith Medical Center and the larger Brooklyn healthcare sector’s $ 40-billion supply chain is redirected and aligned with innovative models of economic democracy, including unionized worker cooperatives.

In October, 2016, The Interfaith Coalition collaborated with Community Cares Brooklyn and the MIT Co Lab to produce a Participatory Action ReseYarch Report that inspired Governor Mario Cuomo and the State Legislature to enact the VITAL Brooklyn initiative, which will provide 1.4 Billion dollars to address health issues in Central Brooklyn and will launch 3,000 units of affordable housing, food-justice initiatives, comprehensive human services, and an expanded network of new ambulatory care facilities.

Roger Green served as a member of the New York State Assembly from 1981 to 2006, representing the 57th District. During his tenure in the State Legislature, Green chaired several committees, including the Committee on Science and Technology, the Standing Committee on Children and Families, and the Joint Budget Conference Committee on Health and Human Services. Green also served as Chairperson of the New York State Black, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus. He considers his authorship of legislation supporting Higher Education, Children and Families and Human Rights a defining characteristic of his public service. rgreenideas@gmail.com
