Please join the CUNY School of Labor and Union Studies (SLU) and Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice (LDSJ) in welcoming Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) President Stacy Davis Gates for reflections on successes and shortcomings from “freshman year” of movement co-governance in Chicago. This conversation will be moderated by Ana María Archila co-director of the New York Working Families Party.

In her capacity as President of CTU and co-founder of United Working Families, Stacy Davis Gates has helped to elect progressive community leaders from Chicago to all levels of government, culminating in the election of former CTU organizer and middle school teacher Brandon Johnson as Mayor of Chicago in 2023. Mayor Johnson has grounded his administration in creating collaborative government strategies to bridge the gap between government and community to disrupt long-standing mistrust between both groups and build a better, stronger, and safer Chicago.

One year in, Stacy will reflect on the movement’s long-term vision to fundamentally reimagine and remake the dominant politics in Chicago from both the inside and outside, including efforts to center Black communities in shaping the decisions that impact them most directly.

As movement co-governance in Chicago enters its “sophomore year,” local leaders are also grappling with the real questions of:

  • What should outside organizing strategies look like now that we better understand the machinations of power in city government?
  • What approaches best enable us to be in powerful formation as movement leaders?
  • How do we re-imagine who is invited to the conversation—so that our city’s transformation works for all communities?
